Vancouver Whitecap FC have never had a trophy that was as iconic as the 2016 Supporters’ Shield, and yet, the club has one that they will never relinquish.
The 2016 Supporters Shield was given to the Whitecaps for the best record in MLS in the 2014 season, but it was actually given to Whitecaps FC in 1997.
The team went on to win the MLS Cup in 1999.
The Whitecaps won their first MLS Cup championship in 1997 and were a member of the 1998 FIFA World Cup, but the club was also relegated to USL in 2001 and had a long and bitter rivalry with the Vancouver Canucks.
“It was pretty disappointing, because I was going to be able to get something in the trophy room, but I’m not going to get it,” said Whitecaps coach Carl Robinson.
“We were looking for a trophy and we were going to give it to our players, but now we’re not getting it.”
If I’m going to lose a trophy, I’d rather have a trophy than not have it.
“The club did not make the playoffs last year and is now looking to add one more trophy to their collection.
Robinson said he had a list of potential trophies, but was told they could not be awarded until after the season was over.”
He said the club had been approached by MLS clubs in recent months, but would not comment on any of them.”
We have a great history here and we’re going to try and do something special.”

The club will not be making any changes to its roster for the upcoming season.
